Garden birds are a common sight in the UK, but a lot of people don’t know that they have more benefits than just being pretty to look at.
Considering that we share our planet with an estimated 50 billion birds (some sources say that this is a conservative figure, there are probably billions more!), we think it’s important that everyone understands how beneficial birds are, and why they should be protected. This is even more important given that bird populations are on a slow decline, being a significant 11% lower in the UK than they were in the 70s.
Why do we need birds?
Because we’d be in trouble without them! Birds do a lot for our environment, including:
- Providing pest control
- Spreading seeds from place-to-place through their droppings
- Pollinating plants, crops and flowers
- Bird watching is beneficial for your mental health
